Birding from Nairobi to the Coast
Area Visited: Karura Forest , Ngong hills, Nairobi NP, Amboseli Np, Tsavo East and West Np, Taita hills, Arabuko Sokoke forest, Mida Creek and Sabaki River Mouth
Trip Overview
We will visit one of Kenya's popular birding route that host afew number of endemic and near endemic birds,dry country specials ,forest dependents and birds restricted to the Maasai-Somali arid zones while enjoying bird photography and big game viewing
Day 1-Arrival and birding at Karura forest
We will pick you up at Jomo Kenyatta international Airport and depending with the time of arrival we will bird at Karura forest for birds such as Placid, Olive breasted, Yellow bellied and Yellow whiskered greenbuls, Golden winged, Bronzy, Collared and variable sunbirds, Brown chested Alethe, Crowned and Ayre's hawk eagles, Higland rush and African reed warblers, endemic Kikuyu white eye and African citril
Day 2 and 3-Amboseli Np
We will leave our hotel in the morning in the City and drive for 3 hours to the Land of the gentle giants and spectacular views of Mt Kilimanjaro , doing our late morning birding before we check in to our hotel for lunch and later do an afternoon birding.The following morning we will do a full day birding in the park, birds here include Rufous breasted, Black and White and Little sparrow hawks, Little beeeater, Little, White rumped, Horus and alpine swifts, Eastern and Red faced crombecs,Many species of Eagles, Ducks, Sandpipers and other grassland dwelling birds
Day 4 and 5- Tsavo west Np
After breakfast we will leave our Lodge/Camp in Amboseli with our lunch boxes and head towards the Tsavos taking a stop at Oloitoktok Montane Forest at the foot of the mighty Kilimanjaro for the near endemic Mbulu and Kilimanjaro white eye, African stone chat, African hill babbler, near endemic Guttifier race of White starred robin, Northern mountain and Striped cheeked greenbuls, Southern citril and White necked raven.We will arrive in our hotel late in the evening doing a little bit of birding then the next day we will do a full day game drive for birds such as Vulturine and Crested guinea fowls, Northern carmine beeeaters, Rufous naped and near endemic Foxy lark, Chestnut back sparrow lark, Northern brownbul, Pale prinia, Somali tit, Maasai ostrich and many more.Night in a camp or lodge
Day 6: Taita hills
This is one of the kenya crucial birding sites and an area described as Endemic Bird Areas,being part of the eastern arch mountains that streaches from Southern Highlands of Tanzania through North East .We will bird for endemic Taita apalis, Taita thrush, Taita white eye, the rare Taita falcon, Eastern mountain greenbul, Orange ground thrush, Oriole finch ,Usambara double collared sunbird and many more.Then later we will head to Arabuko Sokoke forest.Night in Turtle Bay Beach hotel
Day: 7 and 8:Arabuko Sokoke Forest
In this Coastal forest we will be looking for the endemic Clark's weaver, near endemics such as Sokoke pipit, Malindi pipit, Lowland tiny greenbul, Mombasa woodpecker, Fischer's turaco, Amani and plain sunbirds, Sokoke scops owl, the ubiquitous Golden palm weaver is always another sought out bird here, Krestchmer's longbill, Red capped robin chats, Fischer's and Terrestrial greenbuls, Pale and Forest batises,Bohms spine tails, Southern banded snake eagles etc.Night at Turtle Bay Beach hotel
Day 9 and 10-Mida Creek and Sabaki River Mouth
In this two days we will only birds for water birds and pelagic birds, birds here includes Greater fringate bird,Masked bobby,Striated, Squacco and Madagascar pond herons, Dimorphic and Great white egret,Wooly necked stork, African open bill, Sacred and Hadada ibises, African spoonbill, Pacific golden and Grey plover, Red necked phalaropes, Common, Wood,green, Terek,marsh, Broad billed sandpipers, Little and Temminck's stints, Sanderling, Ruddy turnstone,common greenshank, Spotted and Common redshanks, Black tailed and Bar tailed godwits,Whimbrel, Eurasian curlew,several species of Gulls and Terns.Night at Turtle Bay Beach Hotel.
Day 11 and 12-Tsavo East Np
We will leave for Tsavo East Np and do another two full day game drives for birds such as Friedman's lark, Pink breasted and White tailed larks,Mouse coloured and African penduline tits, Tiny and Rock loving cisticolas, Red fronted warblers, Scarlet chested, Hunter's, Eastern violet backed,Marico and Tsavo sunbirds, Banded parisoma, Scally and Rufous chatterers, Chestnut headed sparrow larks,Quil plover, Heuglin's and Double banded coursers,various species of Vultures and rare mammals.Night in a camp or lodge
Day 13:Chyulu Hills Np
After breakfast we will leave the Tsavos to Chyulu stopping on the way for any exciting birds,we will bird here for the endemic race chyluensis of Dodson's bulbul and mbulu white eye, Orange ground thrush, Abyssinian thrush, Golden winged sunbirds,Willow warbler, Collared sunbirds,Speckled fronted weavers, White headed and Red billed buffalo weavers etc.Night in a lodge or camp preferably Oldonyo wuas lodge
Day 14:To Nairobi and Drop off to the Airport
We will leave the Chyulus with our packed lunch heading to Nairobi and if we will arrive early we will bird Nairobi National park or Ngong hills forest for afew hours then we will drop you to the Airport for a flight back Home
