10 days birding in Central Kenya
Overview
We will mainly bird for birds which are endemic or restricted to Central Kenya and the Far Eastern side
Area Visited:Karura Forest, Aberdares Np, Kinangop grasslands, Castle forest Mt Kenya, Buffalo springs and Samburu reserves,Meru NP and Thika wetlands
Day 1 Nairobi-Karura Forest
Depending on your time of arrival we will bird here for endemic Kikuyu white eye,East african endemi Olive breasted , Grey olive and Placid greenbuls, restricted range endemic Kikuyu citril, brown chested alethe,Yellow whiskered greenbul, edemic snowy barbet etc.Overnight in a Hotel in Nairobi
Day 2 Kinangop Grasslands
After an early breakfast we will depart for Kinangop stopping at manguo for afew Ducks and Sandpipers, arriving at our destination in the mid morning bording for Endemic Sharpe’s longclaw, others include Long tailed widowbird and Whydah, African snipe, Plain backed pipit, Croaking cisticola, and many others.We will have our picnic lunches then drive to Aberdares Np for Late afternoon birding.Night at ark’s camp
Day 3 Aberdares National park
In this diverse habitat we will bird for the endemic Aberdares cisticola, Siffling, Singing, Rattling Zitting, Stout, Pectoral patch and leivaillant’s cisticolas, Kandt’s waxbill, Sooty and Alpine chats, East African Endemic Jackson’s francolin , malachite , Golden winged sunbirds and many more.Night at Ark’s camp
Day 4 Aberdares To Castle Forest Mt Kenya
After breakfast we will bird enroute towards Castle forest arriving at the lodge at lunch time.We will later do an evening birding and overnight at Castle Forest lodge
Day 5 Castle Forest -Mt Kenya
We will do a full day birding searching for Brown capped weaver, Stulhmann’s, Waller’s and Abbot’s starlings, Grey and Purple throated cuckoo shrikes, White headed woodhoope, Black collared and Chestnut throated apalises, Abbysinian ground thrush, Abbysinian crimsong wing, Brown parisoma, African harrier hawk, Crowned eagle, Mountain buzzard any plenty more.Night at Castle Forest lodge
Day 6 and 7 Samburu National Reserve
We will leave for Samburu after breakfast , arriving there in the mid morning , we will have a birding session then later check in at our camp before doing an evening birding.The following morning we will explore this arid lands for a full day , birds here are Vulturine guinea fowl, Chestut throated, Black faced and Lichtenstein’s sandgrouses, Somali beeeater, Somali Courser, Somali crombec,Somali Ostrich, Somali tit, Donaldson’s smith sparrow weaver, Grant’s woodhoope, Eastern yellow billed hornbills, Black cheeked and black faced waxbills, Black throated barbet, Dodson’s bulbul, Fan tailed raven and many more.Night at Larsen or Samburu simba lodge
Day 8 Buffalo springs reserve to Meru Forest
We will drive across the Ewaso Ngiro river connecting the Buffalo springs via the Ngare mara gate birding through the dry acacia woodlands and then later drive to Meru Forest for a bird walk for birds such as Borana cisticola, African black and Scarce swifts, Meyer’s parrot, abbysinian and Common scimitabill, Cape and Rüppell’s robin chats, Sulphur breasted, Doherty’s,black fronted and Grey headed bushshrikes.Night at Else kopjes camp
Day 9-Meru National park
A full day birding here then overnight at Elsa kopjes camp
Day 10 Meru-Thika wetlands
We will head towards Thika after breakfast with our picnic lunches stopping at Wajee nature park for Endemic Hinde’s babbler then later to Thika wetlands for Zebra waxbills,African quil finch, African water rail, Red chested flufftail, Highland rush and Lesser swamp warblers, Grey crowned cranes and Many more.We will then later drive to Nairobi to catch a plane back home.
